Homemade Apple Pie Filling Recipe is soft sweet granny smith apples simmered in brown sugar right on your stovetop. It's easy to make ahead and freeze, and ready in only 20 minutes!

Ingredients
  • 9 cups granny smith apples cored, peeled, and sliced
  • 1 1/2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 3 cups water
  • 1 cup light brown sugar
  • 1 1/4 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup corn starch
  • 1 tbsp ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp nutmeg
Instructions
  1. In a bowl stir together apples and lemon juice. Set aside.

  2. In a large dutch oven, before turning heat on, whisk together water, corn starch, sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Turn heat on to medium and bring to a boil, whisking continuously.  

  3. Add apples and simmer 8-10 minutes, stirring often, until apples are soft. Remove from heat and cool.
