Ingredient Tips & Substitutions

A sheet pan on a table, with individual ingredients for green onion dip.

Green Onions. Pick green onions that are a nice even green color without wilting. They should be firm. Thinner green onions will be more mild, and the roots should look healthy, not brown or breaking. These can also be called spring onions or scallions, depending on where you live.

I’m also only going to use the bright green parts of the green onion. The white parts have a stronger flavor, and I freeze them to cook with later. They’re great for stir fry or any recipe you’d sauté onions with.

Cream Cheese. This helps give the dip structure, richness, and also thickens it.

Sour Cream. This gives the dip a tangy creamy flavor and texture. You can also use Greek yogurt for a lighter version.

Worcestershire Sauce. I like to add this because it gives the dip a little more depth of flavor. Just make sure the one you choose is gluten free, because this can vary by brand.

Garlic Cloves. We’re using fresh garlic cloves because they’ll give you a sharp garlic flavor that you won’t get from garlic powder. If you’re in a pinch, garlic powder will work.

I prefer a garlic press or grated garlic over minced garlic, because it mixes in better.

Spices. I like to add a little bit of dried parsley and onion powder for flavor, then season the dip with kosher salt or sea salt, and black pepper to-taste. You can also use fresh parsley instead of dried parsley.

Recipe Variations

  • Make this spicy with a dash of hot sauce, pickled jalapeños, chili powder, cayenne pepper, or red pepper flakes.
  • Add some hot sauce, shredded cheddar cheese, and crispy bacon pieces for a loaded dip!
  • Use the white parts of the spring onion and sauté in a little butter or olive oil, then add the caramelized spring onions to the dip for a caramelized spring onion dip recipe. This is similar to a homemade French onion dip.
  • Try adding different seasoning blends, like my Homemade Ranch Seasoning, and serve over baked potatoes or with a vegetable platter or charcuterie board.
  • Add more fresh herbs like dill, parsley, or chives for an herb variation. Try adding a squeeze of lemon juice for brightness. Or a combo of lemon zest and lemon juice for a bright summer flavor.
  • Make this lighter by using Neufchatel cheese and Greek yogurt instead of cream cheese and sour cream.
  • For a vegan version, use a non-dairy yogurt and a non-dairy cream cheese, just check that they’re gluten free first.

Recipe Tip! Be careful not to over-mix the dip, or it will thin out too much. Stop when everything is just combined, then fold in the green onions (spring onions).

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make green onion dip ahead of time?

Yes! Green onion dip is the perfect party recipe to make ahead of time. Combine everything, then cover and refrigerate until you’re ready to serve. Because we’re using fresh herbs to make this, I recommend making it less than 24 hours ahead of time to maintain freshness.

Recipe Tip! If you want your cream cheese to mix well without any lumps, take it out of the refrigerator and let it soften for about 20 minutes before you mix it with the sour cream.

Storage

Refrigerate this dip for 2-3 days in an airtight container.

I don’t recommend freezing, because the texture will change and it may turn out grainy.

Cooking Tips

  • If you want a stronger onion flavor, you can also add the white parts of the green onion. I prefer a more mild scallion flavor, so I keep it to the green parts.
  • Try to chop your green onions into smaller, even pieces. This helps them disperse in the dip evenly so each bite tastes the same. This is the same reason I use a garlic press, so the garlic is more mashed than chopped and spreads out more.
  • If your dip feels too thin, refrigerate it for about 30 minutes to let everything thicken up a bit.
  • Instead of an electric hand mixer, you can also use a food processor and pulse until just combined.

Cooking Tips
  • If you want this to have less of a bite, use 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder instead of fresh garlic.
  • Soften the cream cheese for at least 20 minutes at room temperature to prevent lumps when mixing.
  • Stop when everything is just combined, then fold in the green onions.
  • The white parts of green onions have a much stronger flavor, which is why I only use the dark green parts.
