Can you use graham cracker crust for apple pie?

Personally, I think gluten free graham cracker pie crust works with any pie. If you want to use graham cracker crust for apple pie, what you’re going to end up with is more of an apple crumble or crisp. But the cinnamon and nutmeg goes really well with apple pie filling.

If you do use graham cracker crust for apple pie, simply fill the pie crust with the apple pie filling. Then use extra gluten free graham cracker pie crust dough to sprinkle on top of the pie and bake as normal. Since this crust takes less time to cook than the traditional apple pie crust, you might have to cut down on the cooking time by about half.

How To Make Gluten Free Graham Cracker Crust. Also, what is the best way to crush graham crackers?

This one is easy! The best way to crush graham crackers is in the food processor. Simple break up the cookies with your hands as you put them in the food processor. Then pulse a few times, until you have small graham cracker crumbles. You can then add the spices, sugar, and melted butter, and pulse a few more times. Then viola! Your graham cracker crust is crushed, and ready for the pie plate.

Then, you add the dough to a greased pie plate and press it to form the crust. Bake until lightly toasted, and that’s it! You have a homemade gluten free graham cracker pie crust.

What spices can you use in a gluten free graham cracker pie crust recipe?

I use cinnamon and nutmeg in my gluten free graham cracker pie crust recipe. I’m also using store-bought gluten free graham crackers, which already have other spices in them. If you make your own gluten free graham crackers, you might want to change the seasoning around and find what works for you. You can also try a teaspoon or two of pumpkin pie spice!

Do you have to cook graham cracker crust?

Technically, no, you do not need to cook graham cracker crust. But there are a few reasons you might want to.

  1. Baking graham cracker crust helps prevent it from crumbling once your pie is totally done. Otherwise, it would have to stay cold, as it’s basically the cold butter that’s holding it together.
  2. Cooking your graham cracker crust helps the crust not stick to the pie plate as you’re serving the pie. Just as the butter holds the crust together, it also sticks it to the pie plate when it gets cold. When you cook graham cracker crust, you melt the sugar and form more of a crust and less of a sticky butter/sugar situation.

Can you freeze homemade graham cracker crust?

Yes! You can absolutely freeze homemade graham cracker crust. I usually bake them, then wrap the crusts tightly in plastic wrap, put them in a ziplock bag, then stick them in the freezer. You want to be sure to keep the air out to prevent frost. Then you’ll have a gluten free pie crust any time you need one!
