Why Youโll Love This Recipe
Easy: This spice blend is really easy to throw together, using spices you probably already have in your cabinet!
Budget Friendly: You get a lot more pumpkin spice blend for a lot less money when you make it yourself, instead of buying it already mixed together.
Gluten Free: Making this from scratch is one way to be sure that this is 100% gluten free!
Ingredients Youโll Need
Ground Cinnamon. This adds a really nice flavor with sweet notes, and makes up the majority of the spice blend.
Ground Ginger. This gives the pumpkin spice a warm and slightly spicy note, and in my opinion, one of the most important spices in the blend.
Ground Nutmeg. This spice adds a little warm, nutty flavor. But don’t overdo it, because nutmeg can also be very strong, so a little bit goes a long way.
Ground Allspice. This is another strong spice that tastes like a combination of other fall spices, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg. It helps balance the sweet notes in the other spices. Allspice is not a blend of spices by itself.
Ground Cloves. I use this spice a little less than the others, because too much can add bitterness to the blend. But in the right amount, cloves add some warmth and balance out the sweetness in recipes.
Kitchen Tools
For this spice blend, all you need is a bowl, whisk, and an airtight container.
How to Make Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice
Time needed: 5 minutes
- Mix Spices.
Add all of the spices to a bowl. Whisk together until well-combined.ย
- Store.
Pour the spice blend into an airtight spice container. Keep in a cool, dry place away from sunlight until ready to use.ย
Recipe Variations
- Pumpkin pie spice blends are all the same spices, with slight differences on how much of each spice to add. If you want this more earthy and strong, increase the nutmeg and allspice. For a sweeter blend, increase the cinnamon instead.
- Add a dash of ground black pepper for a slightly spicy note that goes well in pumpkin recipes.
Recipe Tip! Pay attention to the expiration dates on your spices if you make this blend with what you already have in your pantry. I recommend buying them fresh, because the spice blend will last longer when made with fresh spices.
Frequently Asked Questions
Pumpkin spice recipes are usually a combination of common spices you’ll already have in your pantry, typically used in pumpkin pie. While the spice blends can very slightly, the basic spices in the blend are cinnamon, ginger, cloves, allspice, and nutmeg.ย
The majority of your pumpkin pie spice mixture should be made of cinnamon, which has a lighter, sweeter note than the other spices. Don’t go too heavy on the cloves and allspice, which can be very strong when you add too much.ย
Recipe Tip! If a recipe lists pumpkin pie spice, you can use this spice blend as a 1:1 replacement for the store-bought version.

Storage
Store pumpkin pie spice in an air-tight container in a cool, dry place away from sunlight. This spice blend typically lasts 1-2 years, or until the earliest expiration date on the individual spices used to make this recipe. Spices lose their color and potency over time.
I like to store this spice mix in the pantry in little spice jars or mason jars.
Cooking Tips
- If you need a pumpkin pie spice substitute, apple pie spice is really similar, it contains a blend of cinnamon, nutmeg, and allspice. You can use the apple pie spice and add ground cloves and ginger to make pumpkin pie spice. The ratio of spices will be a little different, but it’s close enough.
- I like to buy ground spices, but you can also buy the whole spice and grind yourself for an even fresher flavor. Check the instructions for each individual spice, because some require other steps and storage conditions when making from scratch.
