Homemade Italian Seasoning is quick and easy to throw together, made with a blend of Italian herbs and spices, ready in 5 minutes or less!

It’s always good to know how to make your favorite seasoning blends at home. If you run out one day, you can make your own without having to go to the store in the middle of a recipe! One of my favorites is this Homemade Taco Seasoning, followed by this Homemade Ranch Seasoning.

This is a quick and easy homemade spice blend that is very versatile. Use this in a lot of different recipes like marinades, Italian salad dressing, pizza sauce, marinara sauce, or on meats or roasted vegetables.

You can change the balance of flavors around by adjusting the spices to fit your preferences in your favorite Italian dishes. Try using this to season Sheet Pan Chicken Thighs, one of my favorite recipes!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Individual ingredients for homemade Italian seasoning on a plate on a table.

Marjoram. This is used a lot in Italian sauce recipes. It’s earthy and sweet, similar to oregano.

Basil. This is a staple in certain dishes in Italian cooking, but usually as a fresh herb. The dried version can be a little strong as it is very aromatic. We’re using dried herbs for this recipe.

Thyme. This is very often used in Italian cooking in stews and with meat, or paired with lemon and garlic for marinades or salad dressings. Thyme is sweet and peppery, but the fresh herb is stronger in flavor.

Oregano. This has a very strong flavor, with peppery, earthy, minty notes. It’s used in a lot of tomato-based recipes like sauces, and also in salad dressing and marinades.

Parsley. This is the most common herb used in Italian cooking, usually as a fresh herb. It tastes lightly peppery and earthy, with a very light flavor compared to other herbs.

Rosemary. This has a peppery and earthy woody flavor with hints of lemon. Even the dried version of rosemary can be very strong. In Italian cooking, this is often used in roasted dishes.

Sage. This is often used in Italian pasta and risotto recipes. It’s known for having earthy citrus and peppery flavor, and a nice savory flavor.

Garlic. Use either granulated garlic or garlic powder. This recipe calls for granulated garlic. If you’re using garlic powder, which is less strong, add more.

Red Pepper Flakes. These are very popular in Italian cooking, and adds a lot of flavor and heat to the dish. They’re often used in pasta dishes or sauces.

Italian Seasoning Replacement

If you don’t have all of the herbs and spices for this recipe, you can use a smaller blend of parsley, oregano, thyme, and garlic powder instead. Store bought Italian seasoning blends often use different blends of spices, and you can go with whatever blend you like best.

Storage

Store your seasoning blend in an airtight container in a cool, dry place for up to 6 months. This doesn’t need to be refrigerated, but it will keep for longer if it is. For the best quality, keep away from sunlight. This recipe only uses dried herbs and spices.

You can check to make sure your Italian seasoning mix is still good by checking the aroma. When it’s no longer aromatic, it is time to discard.

Recipe Variations

  • Add more or less heat with the red pepper flakes, or leave them out entirely if you don’t like spicy food.
  • For a complete flavor profile in this blend of spices, add some salt and black pepper. Add as much or as little as you’d like. You can also try adding garlic salt instead of granulated garlic.

Cooking Tips

  • Make sure to mix everything together well, so the spices are evenly dispersed.
  • Use this Italian spice blend in any recipe that uses Italian type seasonings to simplify the spice part of the recipe!
  • This recipe uses dried herbs and spices only. Fresh herbs and spices have a wonderful flavor, but are not shelf stable, so they won’t last as long and need to be refrigerated. If you want to use fresh herbs, you’re better off mixing them with a little bit of oil or butter and freezing them in ice cube trays.
