This is my new favorite green beans recipe, made with fresh green beans with garlic powder, paprika, salt, pepper, and parmesan. It’s a few simple ingredients, and you can get creative with whatever spice blend you’d like!

These green beans will have a slight crunchy texture, but you can increase the pressure cook time by 1-2 minutes to make the beans softer.

This is perfect with a holiday meal, or even just to meal prep on the weekend, and will be your new go-to vegetable side dish!

Ingredients You’ll Need

Individual ingredients for instant pot green beans on a marble table.

Green Beans. We’re using 1 pound fresh green beans (string beans) for this recipe. Just give them a good wash and trim the ends off.

Broth. I like to use vegetable broth, but that’s entirely up to you. This will also work with beef or chicken broth. Just make sure the brand you’re using is gluten free.

Olive Oil. I’m using extra virgin olive oil for flavor. Vegetable oil or canola oil would also work.

Spices. We’re using a really simple blend of salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. You can use your favorite seasoning blend here.

You can also try this Rotisserie Chicken Seasoning for this recipe.

Parmesan. Add the parmesan at the very end. I like to use shredded parmesan, but you can use grated, too.

How to Make Instant Pot Green Beans

Step by step photos for how to make instant pot green beans.
  1. Add green beans to a medium bowl. In a separate small bowl, whisk together the spices and olive oil. Pour the spices and oil over the green beans and toss to coat the beans evenly.
  2. Place the steamer basket into the instant pot and pour the broth into the bottom of the pot.
  3. Put the green beans into the steamer basket. Place the lid on the instant pot and lock it into place, putting the pressure valve in the closed position. Set the instant pot on manual high setting for 0 minutes. The green beans will pressure cook as the pot comes to pressure. Once the time is up, carefully turn the steam valve to the venting position to quick release pressure.
  4. After the pressure is gone, remove the lid and transfer the green beans to a serving bowl, discarding the liquid. Add additional salt and black pepper to taste, top with parmesan cheese and serve.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long can you cook green beans in the Instant Pot?

The green beans will cook as the pot comes to pressure, which takes about 8-10 minutes. So when you set your pot, set it for 0 minutes. This will give you a crisp-tender green bean.

For a softer texture (more like the texture of canned green beans), set the instant pot for 1 minute to increase the cook time. I don’t recommend going past 2 minutes of cooking time, or the beans will be soggy.

Can you make pressure cooker green beans with no steamer basket?

You can add the green beans to the instant pot without the steamer basket, using the trivet instead. I recommend using the steamer basket, because it makes it significantly easier to lift the beans out of the pot.

Storage

Refrigerate cooked green beans for 3-4 days in an airtight container.

You can also freeze these pressure cooker green beans in an airtight container for 2-3 months.

Cooking Tips

  • If you don’t have vegetable broth, you can use chicken broth, beef broth, or a cup of water instead.
  • If you have a larger crockpot, use 1 1/2 – 2 cups of broth. Enough to make sure the bottom of the instant pot is covered.
  • Add some heat with cayenne pepper, a dash of hot sauce, or red pepper flakes. Or some fresh flavor with a few tablespoons of fresh lemon juice.
  • Watch the time and don’t let the pot natural release. This will cook the beans too long and you’ll have over-cooked green beans.
  • We’re topping this recipe with parmesan, but you can also use cooked chopped bacon pieces (2-3 slices bacon), cherry tomatoes, lemon zest, sliced almonds, or roasted garlic.
