Why You’ll Love This Recipe
Better Flavor – This tastes WAY better than bottled blue cheese, because the fresh ingredients give it a richer, tangy, balanced flavor.
Adjust As-Needed – Because you’re in control of the ingredients, you can adjust it to be creamier, thicker, chunkier, tangier, whatever flavor profile you’d like!
Ingredients You’ll Need

Crumbled Blue Cheese. The better quality of blue cheese you use, the better the flavor will be in the dressing.
Don’t skip mashing the blue cheese with a fork before adding it to the dressing, because it helps distribute the flavor more evenly. You can leave some out if you want some chunks of blue cheese in the dressing.
If you’re gluten free, avoid any blue cheese with gluten-containing grains on the label. You can read more about blue cheese with the National Celiac Association.
Mayonnaise. This is another ingredient that will change the flavor depending on what brand you choose, but adds a lot of creaminess to the texture of the dressing. Pick a mayo that you know you like the flavor of, because they vary in sweetness.
Sour Cream. I like a light and tangy dressing, and sour cream adds to that flavor. If you want the dressing a little heavier, swap the ratio of sour cream and mayonnaise.
Buttermilk. This adds another tangy flavor, while giving you the ability to thin out the dressing until you get a consistency you’d like. You can also use regular milk, but buttermilk will have the best flavor.
Distilled Vinegar. I’m adding vinegar for flavor and acidity, and also to balance out some of the sweet creamy notes from the mayo. You can also use lemon juice instead of vinegar.
Fresh Chives. This adds freshness and a little color. You can also use fresh parsley or dill.
Sugar. A touch of sweetness balances out any savory notes.
Spices. I like to use a little garlic powder, onion powder, kosher salt, and black pepper. If the blue cheese is on the sharper side, you might not even need much salt.
You can also use fresh minced garlic cloves instead of garlic powder. I recommend using a garlic press, to crush them a little and distribute the flavor more evenly.

Kitchen Tools
For this recipe you’ll need a medium sized mixing bowl, a fork, and a whisk.
How to Make Homemade Blue Cheese Dressing

Add the blue cheese to the mixing bowl and use a fork to break up any large chunks.

Whisk together everything but the buttermilk. Once combined, slowly add the buttermilk, whisking until you reach the desired texture.

If the dressing is too thick, add any extra buttermilk as-needed.
Recipe Variations
- Make this chunky by breaking up half of the blue cheese (to make sure the flavor distributes evenly), and adding the other half with bigger pieces.
- Use this as a burger sauce to add some blue cheese flavor to your next BBQ!
- For a higher protein version, swap the sour cream for plain greek yogurt. Full fat yogurt will have the best texture.
- Try changing the flavor around with more fresh herbs, like fresh parsley or fresh dill.
- If you’re serving this as a blue cheese salad dressing, try stirring in some crumbled cooked bacon for more flavor. This salad dressing works great over a wedge salad with extra bacon pieces as topping.
- For a more savory note, try adding a dash of Worcestershire sauce.
Recipe Tip! The flavors for this blue cheese dressing really come together as they sit. For the best flavor, make this ahead of time and refrigerate it for at least an hour before serving. It may thicken in the refrigerator, just give it a good stir.
Frequently Asked Questions
If your dressing turned out too thin, try whisking in more of a thicker ingredient like sour cream. This should help adjust the consistency back to a thicker texture. I recommend waiting to add the buttermilk until all other ingredients are added, and then add it as-needed to make sure you like the thickness of the dressing.
Recipe Tip! I like to adjust the texture depending on what I’m making this for. If I’m serving this with wings, I’ll leave out some of the buttermilk and make it a little bit thicker. For salad, I’ll go on the thinner side instead.

Storage
Refrigerate homemade blue cheese dressing for 3-4 days in an airtight container.
I don’t recommend freezing this dressing, because the texture will change and not be as good.
